B is the letter we’re doing this week, and there are tons of things that start with B. I’m not going to have any problem finding things to do or books to read.

We started off our Flynn School this morning doing a science experiment from the Mudpies to Magnets book. Flynn loved it. Though he was kind of surprised at what happened at first. Here’s the experiment:

Supplies: baking soda, vinegar, empty bottle, 1 balloon, funnel (or something else to get the baking soda in the balloon).

Directions: Using the funnel put some baking soda in the balloon. Pour some vinegar in the bottle. Carefully stretch the opening of the balloon over the mouth of the bottle without letting the baking soda fall into the bottle. Tip the balloon up to dump the baking soda into the bottle and watch as the vinegar bubbles and the balloon inflates. Try experimenting with different amounts of baking soda and vinegar.

We each had our jobs. I was in charge of the vinegar, Flynn was in charge of the baking soda, I was in charge of putting the balloon on the bottle, Flynn was in charge of tipping the balloon up. It was really fun and he kept wanting to do it over an over. I took a video of the first time so I’ll try to get that posted.

Next, we did beads. I’d been collecting fun stuff to do with Flynn before we came here and I had a little container of beads and some string to thread them. Well, I had to do the beads before we go so it wouldn’t be a waste of effort to bring them. We made bead bracelets. We started making a necklace, but then Flynn told me that necklaces were for girls… probably because he was tired of doing his. So we turned it into a bracelet.

Then he wanted to do the balloon again.

We have to go to the library tomorrow to pick out some B books, but tonight is FHE so we’re reading from the Children’s Book of Mormon. That works, eh?

Okay, so I’ve had two really gross encounters with hair the past two days that I just had to mention it. It’s not a typical thing, so that’s why you’re hearing about it.

1) On Saturday when I was trick-or-treating with Flynn there was a guy in a shop that has a scary unibrow. Seriously, it made Flynn nervous enough that he didn’t want to take the treat from him. He was otherwise very well-groomed– clean cut hair, tidy goatee– but his eyebrows were so gross all the way across his forehead. I almost wondered if it was part of a costume. But he didn’t have any “Bert” clothes on.

2) And this is the worst one. On the way home from Church on Sunday we got off the T at our stop and were walking behind this pretty huge guy. I noticed that his pants were really long so that he was walking on them, so I looked up and saw that they were pretty much falling off his waist. And then I realized that his underwear were also in the same situation exposing this big hairy backside. It was so gross! Gives me the willies just writing about it. So I had to totally just look up at the ceiling until we passed him because I was going to start cracking up at any moment. No pun intended. I had to force myself to keep a straight face.

Hair is just fine in the right places. Usually it’s just hair that’s not attached that grosses me out. But this was just wrong.
